Cooking Down East with Marjorie Standish

When I began to cook my way through Marjorie Standish's Cooking DownEast cookbook I had no idea how much fun and what a warm reception I would have from our customers at the Blue Elephant Cafe. Not a day goes by where a customer doesn't have a story about Marjorie's cookbooks and how they are sitting a home worn out on the shelf, or about how they remember their mother pulling the book off the shelf to make dinner or perhaps a favorite dessert.

Now a month into the project I am starting to find my way to the heart of the book and get into some really funky recipes. Keep checking the blog for daily recipes and stories coming your way from Cooking DownEast with Marjorie Standish.

      1/2 c cooking oil
      4T cocoa
      1c water

      Sift together:

      2c sifted flour
      2c sugar

Pour chocolate sauce over dry ingredients and mix well. Then add:

      1/2 c buttermilk
      2 eggs

      1 tsp vanilla

Pour into greased broiler pan or large jelly roll pan. Bake 20 minutes at 400 degrees. While cake is hot, frost with this frosting.
